Why Does White Noise Stop Working?

You bought the machine. For two weeks it was magic. Now it is furniture — a hum you no longer hear, and your sleep is back to whatever it was before.

This is one of the most common complaints in sleep-sound forums, and almost nobody answers it properly. The honest answer has three parts: your brain habituated, the sound may never have been doing as much as you thought, and the fix is probably not the one every product page sells you.

Why does white noise stop working after a few weeks?

Because your nervous system is built to stop responding to sounds that repeat and mean nothing. This is habituation — a decline in response to a stimulus that is presented over and over without consequence. White noise is the ideal habituation target: constant, featureless, and completely uninformative. Within days to weeks, your brain files it under "safe, ignore," and the alerting response that made it feel calming in week one fades.

Habituation is not a malfunction and it is not tolerance in the drug sense. It is the same mechanism that lets you stop noticing the fridge compressor, your own clothing, or a clock you walk past every day.

What exactly is habituation?

Habituation is one of the most conserved forms of learning in biology — it happens in sea slugs, in insects, and in humans. A 2009 consensus review in Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (Rankin et al.) laid out the properties that define it, and four of them explain almost everything people experience with sleep sounds:

Does your brain actually stop responding — or just stop noticing?

This is where the research gets genuinely interesting, and where most sleep-sound content gets it wrong.

In a large laboratory study of transportation noise during sleep, Basner, Müller and Elmenhorst (Sleep, 2011) tracked 72 people across eleven consecutive nights. Cortical effects on sleep structure were subtle, and they got subtler — arousal thresholds rose both within a night and across nights, which is textbook habituation. But cardiac arousals did not habituate across nights. The heart kept responding to sounds the sleeping cortex had learned to wave through.

That study was about disruptive traffic noise, not a white noise machine, so do not over-read it. But it establishes something important: not noticing a sound is not the same as your body being unaffected by it. "It stopped working" and "it stopped bothering me" can both be true at once, and they are not the same measurement.

Did white noise ever work in the first place?

Possibly less than you think — and this is worth sitting with before you spend money on a fix.

The most rigorous look at this is a 2021 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews by Riedy, Smith, Rocha and Basner. They screened three databases, included 38 studies, and assessed risk of bias across sleep onset latency, fragmentation, sleep quality and duration. Their conclusion: the evidence that continuous broadband noise improves sleep is very low. Some studies even pointed the other way.

So part of "it stopped working" may simply be the novelty effect wearing off — a new bedtime ritual, a sense of control, and a few good nights that regression to the mean would have delivered anyway. That is not a reason to feel foolish. It is a reason to be sceptical of the next device that promises the same thing with a different colour of noise.

If I turn it off, will my sleep get worse?

Probably not as much as you fear, and possibly not at all.

Ebben, Yan and Krieger (Sleep Medicine, 2021) gave white noise machines to ten New Yorkers with sleep complaints in a genuinely loud environment. Time awake after falling asleep improved during the week of use — and, unexpectedly, the improvement persisted after the devices were removed. In a study that small you should hold the result loosely, but it argues against the simple story that the sound is a crutch you cannot put down. Whatever was helping may have been the wind-down behaviour, not the acoustic masking.

The practical implication: taking a deliberate week off is a low-risk experiment, and it is also the fastest route to spontaneous recovery if you want the sound to feel effective again.

Will switching to pink or brown noise fix it?

Temporarily, yes — and that is the honest framing.

Because habituation is stimulus-specific, a genuinely different spectrum reads as a new stimulus and restores some of the response. That is a real effect, not a placebo. But it is a rotation strategy, not an upgrade: you will habituate to pink noise too, on roughly the same schedule. Does making it louder help?

Turning it up is the most common instinct and the worst option on the list.

Louder does not undo habituation — habituation is about repetition and meaning, not amplitude. What louder does do is raise your all-night sound exposure, and the WHO-commissioned systematic review by Basner and McGuire (IJERPH, 2018) is a reminder that nocturnal sound exposure is not a neutral input. Why does a sound with meaning behave differently?

Because the sleeping brain never stops sorting sound by relevance — and featureless noise has no relevance to sort.

Ameen, Heib, Blume and Schabus (Journal of Neuroscience, 2022) recorded full-night polysomnography in 17 sleepers while presenting names spoken by familiar and unfamiliar voices. Unfamiliar voices evoked more K-complexes and more microarousals than familiar ones. The sleeping brain was still discriminating who was speaking — a distinction white noise, by design, does not offer it.

That does not mean a meaningful sound "beats" habituation; every repeated stimulus habituates eventually. It means the two categories are not interchangeable. A structured, changing, self-relevant audio experience is doing a different job from a flat masking hiss, and it should be judged on different terms. The through-line: if a sound has no structure and no meaning, its only job is masking. Once you have habituated, it is still masking — it just no longer feels like anything. FAQ

Can you build a tolerance to white noise? Not tolerance in the pharmacological sense, but functionally yes — it is habituation. Your response to a constant, meaningless sound declines with repeated exposure. It recovers spontaneously after a break, and it is specific to that sound, so a genuinely different sound restores part of the response.

How long does it take for white noise to stop working? There is no established timeline, and it varies widely between people. Reports commonly cluster around a few weeks of nightly all-night use. Habituation proceeds faster with more frequent stimulation, so all-night use every night habituates faster than occasional use at sleep onset only.

Should I stop using white noise entirely? Not necessarily. If you have a real environmental noise problem — traffic, thin walls, a snoring partner — masking is still doing useful work even after you stop consciously noticing it. If you adopted it as a general sleep aid without a specific noise to mask, a trial break costs nothing and tells you a lot.

Does brown noise work better than white noise for habituation? There is no good evidence that any noise colour is inherently more resistant to habituation. Switching helps because it is different, not because it is better. Expect the same curve on the new sound.

Is it bad to run white noise all night? The systematic evidence for benefit is very low, and nocturnal sound exposure is not a neutral input, so running it loud all night for years is not obviously wise. Using it at a modest level during sleep onset, or only when you have a specific noise to mask, is the more defensible default.

Why does my white noise machine work again after a holiday? Spontaneous recovery. Habituated responses partially return when the stimulus is withheld for a period. This is a documented property of habituation, and it is the mechanism behind the "take a break" recommendation.
