Is It Safe to Sleep With Headphones In? An Honest Guide

If you fall asleep to audio — affirmations, ambient sound, a sleep story, an 8D track — you have probably wondered whether wearing something in your ears for seven hours is a good idea. Most articles on this either shrug ("it's fine!") or catastrophise ("you'll go deaf!"). Neither is useful.

Here is the honest version: the risks are real but modest, they come almost entirely from duration and volume rather than from headphones themselves, and nearly all of them disappear once you stop treating sleep audio as something that has to play all night.

Is it safe to sleep with headphones in?

For most healthy adults, occasionally falling asleep with headphones is low-risk. The concerns are not dramatic: cumulative sound exposure at high volume, ear-canal irritation from wearing a sealed earbud for hours, and physical discomfort from pressure. Risk scales with how loud and how long. Playing quiet audio for 30–40 minutes is a very different exposure from eight hours of anything.

That's the short answer. The rest of this article is the detail that actually changes what you do.

What actually goes wrong when you sleep in earbuds?

Three things, in order of how much they matter:

1. Volume, accumulated over time. Hearing damage is a dose — level multiplied by duration. The WHO–ITU global standard for personal audio devices uses a reference exposure equivalent to 80 dB(A) for 40 hours a week for adults (75 dB for more sensitive users). Falling asleep to loud audio every night quietly eats a large share of that weekly allowance while you are unconscious and unable to turn it down.

2. The ear canal environment. A sealed earbud worn for hours traps warmth and moisture and interferes with the ear canal's natural self-cleaning. A small cross-sectional study of 50 earphone users (Alkhalifah et al., Scientific Reports, 2025) cultured bacteria from participants' earphones and found a statistically significant association between reported ear symptoms and sharing earphones with other people. It's a small study and not sleep-specific, so treat it as a hygiene prompt rather than proof of anything: clean your earbuds, don't share them.

3. Comfort and pressure. Side sleepers get the worst of this — a hard earbud pressed between your ear and the pillow is a real cause of soreness and of waking up. This is a design problem with an easy solution (see the comparison below), not a health emergency.

Notably absent from that list: any evidence that hearing sound while asleep is itself harmful. The problems are mechanical and dose-related.

How loud should sleep audio be?

Quieter than you think. A workable rule: set the volume so the audio is just clearly audible in a silent room — the level at which you'd have to concentrate slightly to catch a soft detail. In a quiet bedroom that's usually somewhere around 10–30% on a phone. If the audio is masking traffic or a snoring partner, you'll need more, but "loud enough to drown out" is precisely the habit that burns through the WHO reference exposure.

Two practical tips that matter more than the exact number:

Do you actually need headphones for sleep audio?

It depends entirely on what you're listening to. Some formats are genuinely stereo-dependent; most are not.

If you're mainly using noise for masking, a small speaker is the easiest upgrade you'll ever make: no ears involved, no battery anxiety, no waking up with a bud lodged in the pillow. If you do want headphones for sleeping, the format matters more than the brand: a flat sleep headband (soft speakers sewn into fabric), low-profile flush-fit earbuds, or bone-conduction. Standard over-ear cans and hard-stemmed earbuds are the two worst choices for side sleepers.

Do binaural beats actually justify wearing headphones all night?

Technically they require headphones. Whether they do what's claimed is a separate question, and the honest answer is unclear. A systematic review of binaural beat stimulation and brain oscillatory activity (Ingendoh, Posny & Heine, PLOS ONE, 2023) examined 14 studies: five supported the brainwave-entrainment hypothesis, eight contradicted it, and one was mixed. The authors noted the studies were highly heterogeneous in method, which limits comparison.

So: binaural beats are a legitimate acoustic phenomenon presented as mixed evidence, not an established mechanism. Does listening to audio at bedtime help sleep at all?

The research is more encouraging than you might expect — with one sharp caveat.

A Cochrane review of listening to music in adults with sleep difficulties (Jespersen, Pando-Naude, Koenig, Jennum & Vuust, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2022) pooled 13 studies with 1,007 participants. It found moderate-certainty evidence of improved subjective sleep quality (PSQI) versus no treatment or usual care, and low-certainty evidence for small improvements in sleep-onset latency, total sleep time and efficiency. Three studies using objective measures found no such improvement. No adverse events were reported in any included study.

Read that carefully: people felt they slept better; instruments didn't consistently agree. That's a real finding, not a cure, and it says nothing about any specific product.

The caveat comes from a different angle. Scullin, Gao & Fillmore (Psychological Science, 2021) found that bedtime music can trigger earworms — involuntary musical imagery that keeps replaying as you try to sleep. In their lab study, instrumental versions of popular songs increased nighttime earworms and worsened polysomnography-measured sleep quality. In other words: catchy, melodic music at bedtime can work against you.

The simplest fix: use audio that ends

Almost every risk on this page is a duration problem. Sealed earbuds for eight hours is an ear-canal issue. Audio at bedroom volume for eight hours is a dose issue. Falling asleep on a hard bud is a comfort issue.

Should sleep audio play all night? Usually not. There's little reason to keep audio running once you're asleep, and continuing it multiplies every risk on this page. A finite track or a 30–45 minute timer gives you the wind-down without the eight-hour exposure.
