Somatic Calm
Free 12 min · no email, no sign-up
A 12-minute somatic-style session with bilateral, gentle ambient sound to help you feel grounded in your body and settle a restless mind. A calming practice for the end of a long day.
How to use it
Headphones for the bilateral effect. Sit or lie down and let your attention rest on the sound.
What "somatic" means here
"Somatic" simply means of the body. In practice it describes approaches that start from physical sensation rather than from thought: instead of talking yourself out of tension, you go and find where the tension actually is and let attention rest there. The word has been stretched a long way by the wellness industry, so it is worth saying plainly what this session does and does not involve.
It involves noticing. You move attention through areas that commonly hold tension — jaw, shoulders, hands, belly — and stay there long enough to register what is present. It does not involve trauma work, emotional processing, or any technique that should be done with a professional. This is a calm-down practice, not therapy.
Interoception, and why noticing is the skill
The capacity to sense your body's internal state is called interoception, and people vary a great deal in how accurate theirs is. Someone can be clenching their jaw all day and be honestly unaware of it. That gap matters, because you cannot release something you have not noticed, and the usual advice — "just relax" — assumes a detection step that has not happened.
A guided body practice mostly trains that detection step. The release tends to follow on its own once attention arrives, without needing to be forced; and forcing it usually produces a different kind of tension.
How to use this session
Sit or lie somewhere you will not need to hold yourself up. Do not try to relax on cue. When you reach an area, the only instruction is to notice what is there — tight, warm, numb, nothing at all. "Nothing at all" is a legitimate observation and not a wrong answer.
Twelve minutes is a deliberate length: long enough to get past the first restless stretch, short enough to do on a working day. It sits well either directly after work, as a boundary between the day and the evening, or in the half hour before bed.
If your evenings need more structure than one session: an evening wind-down routine for a mind that will not stop.
