Schumann Resonance (7.83 Hz)
Free · no email, no sign-up
An ambient track built around the 7.83 Hz Schumann resonance theme — a gentle, grounding soundscape for calm and meditation. As with all such tones, the science is mixed; we offer it as a pleasant environment to relax in.
How to use it
Headphones recommended. A grounding backdrop for meditation or quiet evenings.
The physics is real. The wellness claim is not the same thing.
The Schumann resonance is genuine, well-measured physics. The gap between the Earth's surface and the lower ionosphere behaves like an enormous resonant cavity, and lightning strikes around the planet — several million a day — excite it continuously. The fundamental mode sits near 7.83 Hz, with higher modes at roughly 14, 20, 26 and 33 Hz. It was predicted in the 1950s and has been measured ever since. None of that is in dispute.
What does not follow from it is the claim you will see attached to audio: that the brain "syncs" to this frequency, that modern life has cut us off from it, or that listening to a recording restores something. The measured field is extraordinarily weak, the alpha rhythm's overlap with 7.83 Hz is a numerical coincidence rather than a demonstrated coupling, and no recording reproduces an electromagnetic field in any case. Speakers make sound, not planetary-scale electromagnetics.
So what are you actually hearing?
Something worth being straight about: you cannot hear 7.83 Hz. Human hearing starts somewhere around 20 Hz, and below that you may feel pressure but you do not perceive pitch. Every track labelled "7.83 Hz" is doing one of two things — modulating the volume of an audible sound at that rate, so the loudness pulses about eight times a second, or playing a much higher tone and calling it a carrier. Both can sound pleasant. Neither is the Schumann resonance.
We keep this session in the free library because it is a good ambient environment: low, wide, slow, and easy to stop noticing. That is a real reason to listen to something. We would rather say that than sell you the physics.
How to use it
Use it as a background for meditation or quiet work. Keep it quiet — the pulsing is more restful when it is barely at the edge of attention. If you want to compare it with other tone-based tracks, our theta ambience session covers similar ground with a different texture.
The same honest treatment applied to another famous number: do solfeggio frequencies work?
